The problem is fidelity, not code generation
AI can turn a request into code quickly. The harder problem is preserving meaning while that request becomes product decisions, architecture, technical work, and running behavior. Each transition can quietly change what is being built. IFD makes that chain explicit and keeps consequential decisions under human authority.
The central rule
Implementation must not silently redefine the product. A coding agent may choose local technical details, but it must return materially different product directions, authority models, promises, and risk decisions to the accountable human.
Intent is resolved, not frozen
IFD is not waterfall. Resolved intent is the current coherent product direction, sufficiently understood for bounded implementation to proceed. When intent changes, the product authority is deliberately updated and the consequences propagate through architecture, blueprint, campaign, and implementation.
The intent-fidelity chain
IFD connects the full path from a human idea to observed product behavior. The method protects meaning at every handoff instead of treating a specification as the final source of difficulty.
- Human intent and current product reality
- Resolved product direction and governing decisions
- Proportionate system architecture
- Builder-ready technical blueprint
- Bounded implementation campaign
- Agent or developer execution
- Runtime evidence and fidelity reconciliation
Eight principles govern IFD
Intent must be discovered, consequential ambiguity resolved, product authority made explicit, architecture derived from product truth, engineering kept proportional, execution bounded without micromanagement, claims supported by evidence, and change propagated deliberately.
Four paths through the method
The same fidelity discipline applies in different starting states. Formation turns an idea into a coherent first product. Continuation gives an existing product a trustworthy basis for more work. Change propagates a deliberate new direction. Recovery restores fidelity after intent, architecture, and implementation have diverged.
You can practice IFD manually
A small team can maintain an Intent Fidelity Brief, architecture, technical blueprint, and implementation campaign in ordinary versioned documents. Every coding mission should state its outcome, governing decisions, scope, exclusions, escalation conditions, and evidence contract.
Driftbreak makes IFD operational
Driftbreak uses the Case Room to understand user intent and current product reality, resolves consequential decisions with the builder, and produces architecture, a technical blueprint, and an adaptive implementation campaign for coding agents. Implementation evidence can then update the correct authority layer instead of quietly rewriting the product.
